Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) says, ‘Social isolation and loneliness can be harmful to both mental and physical health. They are considered significant health and wellbeing issues in Australia because of the impact they have on peoples’ lives.’
Community Connect is a partnership program between Saints Care and Community of Christ and offers essential food as well as a place for quality community connection for those vulnerable in the community.
Community connect strives themselves on being a diverse and inclusive program that offers:
- Social engagement activities – morning tea
- Foodbank service (currently unavailable)
- Aldi food vouchers
Weekly attendance averages about 20-25 persons/families. The funds for purchasing the Aldi vouchers have come from a Memorial Fund, gifted to Community of Christ Brisbane Congregation some years back to ‘help the needy’. The program has evolved over the last 8 years and has been successfully operating with a wonderful team of dedicated volunteers.

“It’s important that we can offer food where it is needed, but the unique part of the program is the focus on social engagement, sharing in a meditation time, watching a short inspirational video and having discussion. People need to feel they belong, and I know people feel a sense of belonging here.”
